2017 was the 500th anniversary of the Reformation begun when Martin Luther challenged the authority of the Church over the practice of indulgences.  This event, along with its causes and outcomes, will be the topic for our study. The Reformation is arguably the most important single event in the last thousand years of Christianity. But as we will see, there were actually many smaller “reformations” beginning in the late Middle Ages and continuing for centuries. Let’s examine this interesting series of events, both in their historical importance and their continuing significance for the Church today.
